Interior Structures and Dynamics

Numerical modeling is used to characterize mantle convection and crustal evolution on other rocky planets. We seek to understand how the deep interior and the surface may be linked to the formation of planetary atmospheres, mantle evolution and planetary tectonics, and how these couplings may allow for potential habitability over time. We apply fundamental physics and dynamics of convective systems to understand the processes that act to drive, or inhibit, plate tectonics on planetary bodies.

Our seismology group is interpreting seismic data from the Mars Insight mission, refining models of Mars’ interior structure to better understand its formation and evolution.
