Research in the Department of Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences spans a wide range of topics, exploring the Earth as an interconnected system involving geochemical, biogeochemical and physical interactions between the atmosphere, ocean, biosphere, Earth’s surface and its deep interior. The knowledge we gain from studying our own planet is also applied to an expanded understanding of the origins, compositions, dynamic evolution of planetary bodies, reaching from the moon to Mars, and even exo-planets. We use a variety of approaches and tools to conduct our research, including direct observation in the field, remote imagery beamed back from space, analytical techniques to characterize materials, physical experiments to document natural processes, and numerical modeling to extrapolate into inaccessible realms.
